James, born and reared in Texas, began pastoring in 1939 in Northeast Texas. In 1942, he was ordained in the Church of the Nazarene. Also in 1942 he married the love of his life, Gladys, and she faithfully served with him in ministry until God called her home in 1998. In 1948 James graduated from Bethany Nazarene College (now Southern Nazarene University). Over these sixty plus years he has pastored in Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma including pastoring Arlington First Church of the Nazarene from 1950-1960. James transferred from the pastorate in 1972 and entered the field of evangelism. It was his privilege to preach in churches in many states while having his residence in Arlington. In 1993 he rejoined the AFCN staff in his present position as Pastor Emeritus (or as otherwise known “Pastor PapPaw”). Gladys and James have two daughters, Ann Adams and Sue Smith, who also attend AFCN. Even though he is now 94 years of age, James comes to the office at least 60 hours a week. He does this because he loves God and people.
